A Chimney Cake, traditionally called Kürtőskalács, is a popular Hungarian street snack. They are cylinder shaped with a hollow centre resembling a hot chimney when it comes fresh out from the oven.
This chimney cake has a perfect crisp exterior and soft inside making the most delicious dessert. Even better, it's coated in cinnamon and sugar!
Ingredients:
To coat the outside:
You will also need :
Metal tubes or fizzy drink cans wrapped tightly in foil
Mix the yeast, sugar with the warm milk, let it to work for 10 minutes.
In a bowl mix the flour, salt together add the butter and rub it together with your fingers until the butter dissolves, add the egg and the milk mixture. Knead it all together about 10-15 minutes into a nice, slightly sticky and very elastic dough.
Chill for 2 hours, until it doubled in size.
Preheat your oven or grill if you wish to do your chimney cakes there. I used my oven.
Roll the dough out into a thin sheet and cut into long ribbons. Brush your foil wrapped cans with butter and spiral the dough from one end of the cans to the other, do not overlap. Gently roll over the tube on the work surface to press the dough together a little bit.
Brush the dough with butter than roll it into sugar.
Place the rings into a baking tray and place them in the oven bake them util they are golden brown.(or attach the tubes to your spit roast and turn over on the fire continuously until golden brown and crispy on the outside)
When it’s ready roll them again in sugar and cinnamon mixture.
You can top it with ice cream, nutella that is a really common way nowadays but you can eat plain as well, that is how I like it.
Enjoy!!
